Result of a road traffic crash

Every year the lives of approximately 1.35 million people are cut short as a result of a road traffic crash.

Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many results in a temporary or permanent disability (WHO 2018).  The traffic crash report shows the during 2019 there were 352 deaths. It reports that these included 174 people driving.  The cause of death was: 160 involved alcohol/drugs, 87 high speeding, 67 deaths involving trucks, 36 due to fatigue, and 17 due to diverted attention (NZ Transport).  U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics reported that “About 40% of motor vehicle accidents are work-related, which poses a significant risk to employees who drive for their jobs”.  It further stated, only 42.6% of companies presently mandate “driver safety programs” for employees (US Bureau Labor).

Well For Drive Mobile App

Well for Drive is an application made in New Zealand specifically ensuring that employees sign in that they are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and that their fatigue is at a safe level. The app uses an objective cognitive test and reflex time test.

While this is a self-test that relies on employee honestly, if it is made mandatory prior to the driver getting into any vehicle, it can also give the employer a record that shows that the employee has acknowledged that they are fine to drive. This information could be very valuable if there was to be an investigation for an accident, and prove that the employer has taken reasonable steps to ensure the employee is safe. In the case of a Work Safe investigation, it can show that the employer not only had a policy to address safe driving, but also had a proactive protocol to try to ensure that the driver was safe to drive when beginning work.

The data could be kept by the employers Health & Safety team or alternatively stored by us, an external Safety Consultant, where confidentiality can be assured.
